Song Lyrics that Instruct and Edify
This is a recently learned song I was thinking about today. I first heard it during the time of hymn singing at leader's meeting in BSF. It has become a new favorite of mine and I love that the words are taken directly from Psalm 1. I memorized that Psalm many years ago as a young girl and have not forgotten the words. Some of my favorite songs and hymns to sing and think about are those that incorporate either direct words of Scripture or clear Scriptural allusions.
Last evening I reviewed some hymns with the children that we have been learning throughout the year during the study of Moses. I was so pleased that they knew many of the words by heart and were eager to sing their favorites. It seems two of the hymns they love best are He Leadeth Me and Lift High the Cross. I reminded them to sing these songs often and to think upon the words-- to remember who God is and how we should praise Him. I hope the words of this song will encourage you as you meditate on God's law.
Blessed Is the Man
Words and Music by Michael Baughen
Arranged by Jim Thornton
Blessed is the man, the man who does not walk
In the counsel of the ungodly: blessed is that man.
He who rejects the way, rejects the way of sin
And who turns away from scoffing: blessed is that man.
But his delight, by day and night,
Is the law of God Almighty.
He is like a tree, a tree that flourishes,
Being planted by the water: blessed is that man.
He will bring forth fruit, his leaf will wither not,
For in all he does he prospers: blessed is the man.
For his delight by day and night,
Is the law of God Almighty.
The ungodly are not so, for they are like the chaff
Which the wind blows clean away: he ungodly are not so.
The ungodly will not stand, upon the judgment day
Nor belong to God's own people: The ungodly will not stand.
But God knows the way of righteous men
And ungodly ways will perish.
Refrain
Blessed is the man, the man who does not walk
In the counsel of the ungodly: blessed is that man.

I love this chapter from Psalms, Lydia, and would love to hear the music for the song! You'll have to sing it for me next time I see you. :-)
I googled this song, so that I could post it on facebook. I'm in the middle of doing my BSF lesson and Isaiah 26 and Psalm 1 just made me start singing it. I found your blog. Yeay!! you are a CL! Me, too, in the day class, since 1991. It's Christmas every week! I'm glad you are a singer. My grandfather was a rising star as a tenor in his early life, but he gave up the fame to stay home with his wife and 4 children. He eventually started "Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony" in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, for young singers to spend summers training and performing. It is still in existance, as far as I know. Gratefully, Phyllis Winn
I googled this song, since it was swirling around in my head while working on my BSF lesson, Isaiah 26, and Psalm 1. I plan to post it to my facebook page to share. I, too, and a CL in the day class in Longview, Texas...since 1991. It's like Christmas every week, teaching the little ones. My grandfather had a rare tenor voice that brought him much acclaim, and he was headed for stardom, but he realized that he couldn't travel that much and also do justice to being a husband and raising their 4 kids. He started "Inspiration Point Fine Arts colony" in Eureka Springs Arkansas, to give singers a place to train and perform in the summers. I believe it is still in operation.
Gratefully, Phyllis Winn
